PARKING GARAGE AT THE CATHEDRAL

The historic city centre lacks 2 000 parking spaces

THIS PARKING GARAGE WILL FILL A CURRENTLY VACANT LOT

A new parking garage on parcels nos. 461/1 and 461/2 covering a total area of 2,038 m² in the Moravská Ostrava cadastral area. The vacant lot is located between Náměstí Msgre. Šrámka (a square that is the site of Ostrava’s cathedral) and Zámecká Street, immediately to the south-west of the city’s central square (Masarykovo náměstí).

From the late 19th century to the end of the Second World War, this vacant lot was the site of a school; the building was severely damaged by bombing in the final days of the war, and after the war it was demolished. Directly adjacent to the lot is the original building of the Bachner department store (now known as the Horník building).

The planned project for a multifunctional parking garage will remove parked cars from the area of the cathedral square (Náměstí Msgre. Šrámka) and Purkyňova Street, as well as increasing car parking capacity in Ostrava city centre.

PARK + RIDE (P+R) AND Park + GO (P+G) projects

The City’s plans to build parking garages are a response to the current lack of parking spaces in the selected locations. The City is committed to the ongoing development of several vacant sites in the centre and its immediate surroundings. Many of these sites are currently used as open-air parking areas. Major projects for civic/cultural amenities with an international scope (such as Ostrava’s new concert hall and a new contemporary art gallery) will attract large numbers of visitors from the Czech Republic and abroad, further increasing demand for parking facilities.

The City’s aim is to develop Park + Ride (P+R) and Park + Go (P+G) services in the central part of the Ostrava metropolitan area in the form of paid parking. The City has prepared a number of PARKING GARAGE PROJECTS, and it is now seeking developers to build them.

The City of Ostrava will not support free parking provision in the vicinity. We require developers to respect the already prepared architectural solutions and project parameters.
